Population was created in 2000 and exhibited at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts in 2001. In this installation, light cast upon suspended tulle cubes produces perceptual ambiguity and confusion between the transparent, ethereal cubes and their shadow images, which appear more solid than the cubes themselves. In addition I placed illustrations of shadows as well as blank paper that reflected actual shadows on the walls. Distinction between positive and negative space is blurred as sculpture, shadows and illusion merge in the viewer’s perception.
Inspiration for this work came from an airplane trip, watching clouds roll by my window. An image of Kazimir Malevich’s White on White painting popped into my head while thinking about ambiguity and what would it look like if self-deception were to intersect with space.
